About the Project
Off-Grid City 2009, aimed to contribute Incheon Metropolitan Cityinto a world-class city with suitable urban functions andcommensurate roles involved with current urban regionalplanning issues by promulgating worldwide submissions of urbandesign.The project site has been located in the part of area 11, Songdo,Incheon Free Economic Zone, South Korea, and the designatedarea was approximately 1,677,704 m². The main theme of thisproject was a futuristic U-Eco Community where newtechnologies, the environment, and people are being organized inacceptable harmonies.The project won the ‘Honourable Prize’ of International IncheonUrban Design Competition, South Korea, 2009.
‘Off-grid City’ can be considered as a piece of urban, architectural,and technological design, which includes several solutions in termsof energy efficiency, employing renewable energy sources, andwaste management, as well as original cultural values of location,and contemporary requirements of high-tech 21st century life-style.‘Off-grid City’ represents a concept of zero carbon, zero energy, andzero waste attitudes in various urban functions space, done by teamincluded PhD students of the University of Sheffield, UK from (Iran,South Korea and China) participated in mentioned project.Off-Grid City 2009 has been designed in 7 sections as follows:Dragon Village, which includes residential apartments for local andinternational business men.Songdo Tower, designed as commercial and business centre.Songdo Mall, the grand shopping mall.Songdo Village, which was designed as residential area(apartments) and aimed to reside the middle economic class ofpeople and students.Songdo Eco-Community, which was designed as energy efficienttouristic villas;Songdo Research and Cultural Park, which includes a researchcentre based on libraries, training classes, museums, Seminarrooms, conference halls, cafés, restaurants, and auditorium.Songdo Industrial park, which includes Industrial and official areasfor IT industries, and parking section.
